چکیده

The authors present a method based on dynamic force microscopy to characterize subnanometer-scale mechanical vibrations in resonant microand nanoelectromechanical systems. The method simultaneously employs the first eigenmode of the microscope cantilever for topography imaging and the second eigenmode for the detection of the resonator vibration. Here, they apply this scheme for the characterization of a 1.6 GHz film bulk acoustic resonator, showing that it overcomes the main limitations of acoustic imaging in contact-mode atomic force microscopy. The method provides nanometer-scale lateral resolution on arbitrarily high resonant frequency systems, which makes it applicable to a wide diversity of electromechanical systems. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. Vibrational shape tracking of atomic force microscopy cantilevers for improved sensitivity and accuracy of nanomechanical measurements.

Contact resonance atomic force microscopy (CR-AFM) methods currently utilize the eigenvalues, or resonant frequencies, of an AFM cantilever in contact with a surface to quantify local mechanical properties. However, the cantilever eigenmodes, or vibrational shapes, also depend strongly on tip-sample contact stiffness. In this paper, we evaluate the potential of eigenmode measurements for improv...

Generalized Hertz model for bimodal nanomechanical mapping

Bimodal atomic force microscopy uses a cantilever that is simultaneously driven at two of its eigenmodes (resonant modes). Parameters associated with both resonances can be measured and used to extract quantitative nanomechanical information about the sample surface. Driving the first eigenmode at a large amplitude and a higher eigenmode at a small amplitude simultaneously provides four indepen...

Multimode Q Control in Tapping-Mode AFM: Enabling Imaging on Higher Flexural Eigenmodes

Numerous dynamic atomic force microscopy (AFM) methods have appeared in recent years, which make use of the excitation and detection of higher order eigenmodes of the microcantilever. The ability to control these modes and their responses to excitation is believed to be the key to unraveling the true potential of these methods. In this paper, we highlight a multimode Q control method that exhib...
